Five

Stepping inside her son's room, Anika kissed the top of Legacy’s head. He was so chunky now thanks to all of that good ole breast milk. At ten months with his first birthday exactly two months away, Anika was getting emotional just thinking of him turning one. Birthing him was an experience in itself but watching him grow and do certain things had her blinking back tears. Only her son could bring such emotions out of her.

Placing him inside his crib, she exhaled and smiled down at him. The day before, the temperature dropped and the news predicted they’d get five to six inches of snow tomorrow like mother nature had a point to prove, so their heat was on and blasting. Legacy sweated in his sleep, so she hardly ever covered him with a blanket. Especially if he had a onesie on. Grabbing the baby monitor, she eased out the door, leaving it slightly cracked.

With Christmas less than two weeks away, Anika was really in the holiday spirit. Last year had been hell for her with Lano locked up and being pregnant, but that was all in the past. Like only her man could, Lano had gone all out this year to make up for last year. Since the first of the month, he’d gifted Anika a present for each day. Some were high priced, while others were as simple as a gift card to Ulta Beauty. Lano didn’t know what that was at first, but he’d learned over the years that she liked the store.

Since they were spending Christmas at home this year, Lano’s parents were flying in. It was their grandson’s first Christmas, and they were going nuts with the gifts already. Lina, Lano’s mama, had gotten Legacy every toy imaginable for his age. She’d apologize to Anika later, but as of right now, Legacy was going to be making so much noise.

Knowing they wouldn’t make it down to California for the holiday or for a while, Anika made a promise to have flowers put on Saon’s grave for his birthday. Too many bad memories were attached to his hometown, and as sad as she was for Lano not being able to visit, that just wasn’t a trip she planned on taking for a while. Lano wouldn’t let her either.

In search of the fine ass man who played a hand in creating her baby, Nik strolled toward the opposite end of the house where Lano’s office was. Their mansion home was one Anika thought she’d never get the luxury of enjoying. They weren’t poor growing up, but they surely did struggle some days. Being as wealthy as she was now blew Anika’s mind. She thanked God every day for providing such a lifestyle, especially one she could raise her son in without worry or fear.

“Knock, knock,” she said, pushing the oakwood door open.

Lano looked up from his MacBook screen and licked his lips. “What’s up, ma.”

“Nothing. Just laid Papa down for a nap. You busy?”
